You are probably used to math in the classroom & in competitions, where you get a list of “real-world application” problems and you have to use a formula or some trick to solve it.

But that’s where we are different.
This club is primarily focused on a different topic: math modeling! We will teach you how to apply tons of unique techniques, some of which you might not get to learn until senior year! We also compete in the annual Mathworks Math Modeling (M3) challenge, a national competition with over $100,000 in prizes.

TJ Math Modeling Club is a group where you learn about mathematical modeling techniques with real-life applications. We teach you how to use MATLAB, a programming tool/language that you can use to create detailed models and to statistically analyze data. You'll also learn about many different kinds of mathematical models, like linear regressions, markov chains, and differential equations, all in a simple and easy way. The competition we prepare for is the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3C), where you have a small time frame to work as a team using math modeling to solve a complex problem.

Besides M3C, we have plenty of fun events throughout the year. Our popular blocks are our BC Calculus review sessions which we hold before the cumulative tests, but we also have a half-IRL, half-online scavenger hunt we host later in the year. Finally, we also have game competitions, such as our annual end of the year Minesweeper tournament. The best time someone submitted for an easy Google Minesweeper map was 7 seconds! Do you think you can beat that?
